Mental maths
Fluency with number, not speed-for-its-own-sake. We build the pictures that make mental calculation honest — then practise until it is automatic.
Who it is for
Children who still count in ones, who know tables as a song but cannot split 18 × 5, or who freeze when the calculator is not allowed.
Who it is not for
This is not a leaderboard or a 30-second drill app. If the child only needs extra worksheets, the free resource library is the better starting point.
Outcomes we will actually stand behind
- Strategies the child can explain (split, compensate, use a friendly number)
- Fewer finger-counts, without shame about the ones that remain
- Fluency that supports later algebra, rather than replacing it
Shorter bursts inside a 50-minute lesson: a few well-chosen calculations, talked through, then a check that the strategy transferred.
Curriculum map
Order is the child’s, not the textbook’s, when something is stuck.
- 01Place-value splits
- 02Addition and subtraction strategies
- 03Multiplication as doubling, factoring, and distributing
- 04Division as multiplying backwards
- 05Fraction and percentage benchmarks
- 06Estimating before calculating
Children who still count in ones, who know tables as a song but cannot split 18 × 5, or who freeze when the calculator is not allowed.
