Class 8 maths

Class 8 Maths — topics, practice and one-to-one help

Linear equations in one variable get serious, exponents, identities, quadrilaterals, mensuration of solids, and the last chance to repair number sense before Class 9 algebra accelerates.

Part of G6–G8 (Grades 6 to 8). Open the G6–G8 maths programme →

Why children commonly stall here

Identities are memorised as (a+b)² wallpaper. Exponents collide with ‘add a zero’. Mensuration becomes a formula sheet. Underneath, the Class 6–7 algebra gap is still there.

Misconceptions

The Class 8 traps we actually see

This is the section that should be citable: specific, ordered, and written from classroom pattern — not from a generic syllabus.

2³ is 2 × 3

The exponent is another multiplication sign. Powers of 10 then destroy standard form later.

(a + b)² = a² + b²

The missing 2ab is not a forgotten term. It is a missing area picture.

Formula first, situation never

They can recite the cylinder formula and cannot say which measurement is the radius in a real can.

Worked examples

Three short ones. A live session has more, at the child’s pace.

Write 2⁵ as multiplication, then compare with 2 × 5.

The exponent counts factors, it does not multiply the base by itself that many… wait: 2 used as a factor five times.

Draw (a+b)² as a square. Where is 2ab?

Two rectangles. The identity is a picture before it is a line of algebra.

A cylinder with height 10 and radius 3. What do we need for volume, and why?

The area of the base, stacked. The formula is that sentence compressed.
