Integers extend the number line below zero. Children struggle most with subtracting a negative and with the idea that a number can describe direction as well as size — debt, temperature, a lift.

Why this concept matters

Algebra in Class 7–10 is integers with letters on top. If directed number is a poem of sign rules, every equation is fragile.

Misconceptions, in the order we see them

Two minuses are always a plus, somewhere

The rule is applied to the wrong pair of signs.

Minus a minus is minus

6 − (−2) = 4, because both marks look like take-away.

Zero is nothing, so ignore it

Crossing zero on a number line has no meaning, so 3 − 5 is ‘you can’t’.
