Perimeter is the distance around; area is the space inside. Children mix them because both involve length numbers, and because we introduce the words in the same week without a physical difference they can feel.
Why this concept matters
Mensuration in Class 8–10 is this distinction with more formulas. Mixing them is one of the most common, most fixable stuck points.
