How much does a maths tutor cost?

In India, a competent 1:1 maths tutor usually costs about ₹500–₹1,500 per live hour online, and more for a named specialist or exam-year work. Home tutors vary wildly by city. MathyBrain publishes per-class prices from ₹549–₹899 (depending on grade and plan length), with a ₹99 paid demo you book yourself.

What parents actually pay in India

There is no single market rate. Neighbourhood home tutors, marketplace apps, and branded online 1:1 programmes sit in different bands — and many brands still hide the number behind a ‘counsellor will call you’ form.

As a working range for 2026: local home tutors often sit around ₹400–₹1,000 per hour in smaller cities and higher in metros; serious online 1:1 maths brands commonly land ₹600–₹1,500+ per class once you include curriculum design and reporting. Anything much cheaper usually means group classes, short sessions, or an anonymous tutor with no accountability.

What drives the price up or down

Price is not only ‘tutor quality’. These are the levers that move the invoice:

  • One-to-one vs group — group is cheaper; it cannot diagnose one child’s stuck concept.
  • Session length — 30 minutes is not a 50-minute lesson with a transfer check at the end.
  • Named tutor with a public profile vs a rotating pool.
  • Grade band — Class 9–10 usually costs more than primary.
  • Contract shape — long packages with hidden prices or no EMI clarity often look cheaper and harder to leave.
  • Whether pricing is public — if you cannot see the number, you are paying for a sales process.

MathyBrain’s public numbers

We put the price on the pricing page. Per live class, list prices run from ₹650 (KG–Grade 2) to ₹950 (Grades 9–10). You enrol for 6 or 12 months; the longer plan brings the per-class rate down (for example ₹549–₹899 depending on grade and duration). No-cost EMI is available. The demo is ₹99 for a full 50-minute class with a named tutor — not a sales call.

This is a fixed enrolment term, not a rolling monthly cancel. Early-exit unused lessons are handled under the refund policy — we do not hide a second deposit behind a counsellor call.

How to compare quotes without getting played

When two quotes look different, normalise them:

  • Price per minute of live 1:1 time (not ‘per month’ of vague access).
  • Whether the tutor is named before you pay.
  • Whether the term is clear (and whether no-cost EMI is available).
  • Whether a diagnosis happens before a long plan is sold.
